The Facts: Zachary Tan (ex- Bistro Guillaume in Melbourne) and Jacqui Ektoros (ex- Guillaume at Bennelong) head up the kitchen at this new establishment, designed to unite the best of Europe and Melbourne in one intimate space – think, a garage converted into a courtyard dining space, a green wall of herbs and beechwood tables, with lots of light. The emphasis is on fresh and homemade fare: the muffins, cakes and pastries are baked daily; the jams, preserves and yogurts are all made on-site; and specials highlight seasonal ingredients, whipped into warming soups, creative salads, and bulging sandwiches (using Victoire Bakery bread) for lunch and French-style baked eggs or black rice pudding with coconut for breakfast. And where would a Melbourne-style café be without impossibly good coffee? Devon uses Coffee Alchemy and Five Senses beans, with filter and cold drip options available.
The Find: Whimsically named breakfast dishes include Two Chicks in a Basque (baked eggs) and Little Lost Bread, a sinful take on the much-loved PB&J sandwich that sees brioche French toast topped with warm banana, Nutella, jam, peanut butter and ice cream – make no mistake, this is the sweetest way to start any day.
