In Focus:
FUNK SYDNEY
by Pilar Arevalo
Fans of Spain's cult label Skunkfunk no longer have to stock up on the colourful, utilitarian urban wear every time they go on holiday to Europe.
Funk Sydney, a new instalment in the series of Funk shops which carry the most comprehensive of the Iberian brand's clothing range, opened on Surry Hills' buzzing Crown Street just a few months ago.
With Middle Eastern rug-covered rough concrete floors and jam-packed racks lining the walls, the store reflects the brand’s funky-yet-accessible style. Men's and women's ranges feature simple, multi-functional designs, easy-wearing fabrics and strong graphic prints. Those that look for something fun in their fashion will love the kaleidescopic patterns on T-shirts in soft-drink colours, structured dresses with thick grosgrain belts, cool pants and chunky silver jewellery pieces.
From a simple collection of T-shirts launched in 1996, Mikel Feijoo Elzo's Skunkfunk label has grown to include more than 300 pieces, which can be found in over 700 stores worldwide.
Check out Skunkfunk's loyal band of followers, who are regularly snapped at festivals and music events around the world, and exciting collaborations with designers and artists on the label's website www.skunkfunk.com, which best expresses its madcap, familial motto: “People do Funk”.
