Aldous Massie
Every series of Urban Walkabout Guides is unique and visualised by a local artist whose illustrations grace the covers. Their expressions work with ours to bring you Sydney precincts in all their colours. There’s always a story behind their practice and outputs, so here we give a little more on The Artists. Meet Aldous Massie, whose artwork was featured on the October 2010 editions of the Urban Walkabout Sydney series.
Tell us a little about your artwork?
I "appropriate". I get stuck in phases where I'll become obsessive about a certain person's illustration style, and attempt to learn their methods and techniques to achieve an aesthetically similar finished product. Every now and then, I fall into a sort of trance and draw from my mind, which of course makes the methods and techniques secondary. This doesn't happen as often as I'd like it to.
How did your journey start?
I started sketching from a very young age. I guess you could call it an evolving hobby. I think positive feedback was the original motive: my mum's encouraging.
What have been your biggest challenges?
Early wake-ups.
What keeps you motivated to continue creating?
That sense of momentary disbelief when something begins to appear in front of your eyes. And new stationery.
Who or what inspires you?
Patterns.
What is Sydney’s best-kept secret?
Christine Ashwell's handmade shoes. They last for a thousand years or something.
Whose artwork have you collected for your home?
Friends usually paint on the walls of our attic when they've been drinking. There's a green alien holding balloons, a couple of big skulls, a psychedelic eyeball and a bunch of other stuff.
What was your approach to illustrating the Urban Walkabout Sydney guides?
I wanted a crisp, simple look with minimal colours. They were done digitally.
Tell us about your latest project?
I've been working on album covers for The Only. I just sent through a drawing of the band members meeting some sort of demon-babe from hell. There's also zombies dancing in the background. I hope they don't fire me.
