Aylie McDowall

Every series of Urban Walkabout Guides is unique and visualised by a local artist whose illustrations grace the covers. Their expressions work with ours to bring you Sydney precincts in all their colours. There’s always a story behind their practice and outputs, so here we give a little more on The Artists. Meet Aylie McDowall whose artwork was featured on a range of editions of the Urban Walkabout Sydney series, including the July 2011 editions.

Are you a local artist? Let us know! We're always on the look for fresh talent to feature on the covers of our Sydney shopping & lifestyle guide series.

Aylie McDowall

Aylie McDowall is a multi-skilled remix artist and inspiring woman. Without wanting to make her blush, she’s worked with more great people than we could list including Collette Dinnigan, Nicola Finetti and Issey Miyake. Her visual craft integrates fashion, illustration, web design and a lust for travel. She believes illustration has a huge future in Australia’s design and artistic community, which is one of the reasons why we loved working with her.

Tell us a little about your artwork.
I have quite a few styles and like to experiment with different kinds of media. I mix a lot of traditional artwork with digital enhancement and love to experiment with different textures. My work is quite figurative and I often do not visualise the outcome. My formative, teenage years were spent in Asia and I think this has had an impact on the way I see the world and my artwork.

How did your journey start?
I have drawn all my life, I remember always going to the headmistresses’ office to get a gold star when I was young for my title pages, and this was from the first grade.

What have been your biggest challenges?
Getting the right exposure for my work.

What keeps you motivated to continue creating?
love to create and always will. It is a passion that I am sure will never go away!

Who or what inspires you?
This may seem a bit broad but it is true, EVERYTHING inspires me, it comes from everywhere at any moment, you just have to be aware.

What is Sydney’s best-kept secret?
The Northern Beaches. I grew up on the Northern Beaches but have lived many years in the Eastern Suburbs. It always amazes me how many people have not been to the Northern Beaches, they are by far the best in Sydney!

Whose artwork have you collected for your home?
A beautiful Pianola scroll with a penciled bird by Kareena Zerefos and 3 painted spray cans by Graffiti Artist 'Two One'. In the future I hope to collect a lot more.

What was your approach to illustrating the Urban Walkabout Sydney guides
I enjoy painting with ink so this is how I started. I then scanned the picture into the computer and began colourising it. I learnt quite a lot of new techniques while doing the project.

Tell us about your latest project
I am currently working on a mural in Petrol Cafe in Potts Point. I have never worked at this size before so it is very exciting. The address is 9 Springfield Avenue, Potts Point. Come check it out if you have a mo. I am usually there painting every Tuesday.
